The time has come to downsize my house. I found the 810 square foot space of my dreams. Great views, nice trail for walking the dogs and an easier lifestyle. The problem? Decluttering my old space to fit the new one. I have fallen prey to consumerism and accumulated more possessions than I could truly use. Over time, my excess lead to clutter, both physical and mental, weighing me down and hindering my ability to fully enjoy the space I live in.
Decluttering isn’t just about tidying up; it’s a transformative process that I’m hoping brings a sense of calm, clarity, and renewed energy into my life. By intentionally removing unnecessary items and organizing what remains, I am hoping to create a space that fosters productivity, creativity, and relaxation.
The thought of decluttering an entire house can be overwhelming, so I started off small, one room at a time. By breaking the task into smaller segments, it seemed more achievable and less daunting. I sorted and categorized; creating piles of items to keep, donate, sell, or discard. It was hard to be honest with myself about what I truly needed and use regularly, versus what I was attached to. I tried to follow the Kon Mari method, only keeping items that spark joy.
Mentally I began to organize what I’m keeping. Investing in closet organizers, bins and baskets to keep things accessible and tidy. Hopefully, once my move is complete, I will adopt the one-in, one-out rule. Every time I bring a new item home, whether it’s clothing, kitchen gadgets, or home décor I will get rid of something else to maintain balance and prevent accumulation.
I’m celebrating my progress as I go! Every trip to the charity donation centre and contributions to Habitat for Humanity I treat myself to something special or just bask in the satisfaction that I am getting somewhere and my space is becoming lighter and so is my mood. Here’s to a box, a tape gun and positive intentions!
