Dear CanEVA: Can you help with my 2-year-old labradoodle who keeps digging his way out of our fenced yard?
Digging and dogs seem to go together but excessive, habitual digging is a sign your dog is bored. To fix your immediate problem, make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise outside of his own backyard and keeps his mind stimulated and social. Dogs like to explore and experience new smells, sights and sounds. Fenced in backyards are great for protecting and securing your dog but should not be their only source of outdoor exercise. Get walking..it is good for both of you. For the holes your dog has already dug, fill them full of stones and cover them up, it will be harder for him to dig again. As an extra deterrent you can drop his own feces in the hole…he will turn up his nose and not bother digging in there again!
