February is Dental Health MonthStudies show that as many as 85% of dogs over the age of 3 years old are suffering from a disease that is not only extremely painful, but outright deadly. What condition are we talking about? Periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is more than just a cosmetic issue. In addition to causing inflammation, bad breath, tooth loss, and pain for your dog, bacteria that starts in the gums can work its way into the bloodstream and affect the lungs, the kidneys, and even the heart. This condition could be causing your dog or cat to suffer in silence. We’ve all heard that we should brush our dog’s teeth daily. Many of us, myself included, find this ritual especially taxing between the demands of everyday life and the fact that most dogs absolutely abhor this ritual. While there is no substitute for brushing and periodic vet cleanings, there are some easier to follow steps we can all take to improve the health of our pup’s mouths.Chewing can act as nature’s toothbrush. However, because typical dog food kibble tends to be high in carbs (leading to the accumulation of food around the gums) chewing regular old dog kibble simply isn’t enough. Dental chews are a fantastic way to stimulate mechanical abrasion and remove debris and plaque from the mouth. Another way to stimulate your dog’s chewing is through durable toys with an abrasive surface that helps grind away plaque. The best toys are those with a course surface to more effectively remove food fragments. ...

CanEVA Pet and the German ShepherdHip Dysplasia is a degenerative disease that develops in approximately 15% to 20% of all German Shepherds per the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. According to the OFA, 19.8% of German shepherds born between 2011 and 2015 suffer from hip dysplasia. The progression of it and the treatment options available depend on a number of factors, including the degree of misalignment and age of the dog. Dogs with hip dysplasia can live comfortably into their golden years and experience an improved quality of life with support from their owners. It is possible to help prevent and/or limit the dog’s pain by supplementation. CanEVA PET helps with hip dysplasia by increasing the muscle mass around the joint for support and increases the elasticity and density of ligaments to hold the bone in place, thereby giving more support to the hip to move with less pain and remain strong. The congenital disorder means that the hip socket is actually too lose and the femur causes damage. Stay attentive to your dog’s movement, as hip dysplasia may happen as young as 4 months. The sooner it is recognized the more beneficial CanEVA PET can be for long term effectiveness. Watch for rapid weight gain, trouble standing up, favouring one leg or limping, hesitation to go up stairs and running in a bunny hop, where the dog will use both hind legs together to take the weight off the damaged hip. ...

CanEVA PET and the Labrador

The most common disorders in Labrador retrievers are otitis externa, overweight/obesity and degenerative joint disease. Skin conditions are common because of the oily nature of the fur on labs that helps moderate their body temperature level while spending time in water and lakes. Strangely enough the skin conditions are more prevalent in chocolate labs then the yellow or black colouring.  Labs are also at more of a risk for being overweight.  They do love to
